Growing up as a student athlete in Cincinnati, Joe Panos had more than his fair share of visits to the orthopedist for sports injuries. Now Panos, an M.D.-Ph.D. student at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, is hoping to become an orthopedic surgeon. Fourth-year medical student Jennifer Talbott knows a thing or two about human trafficking. Her father is the director of advocacy at the Human Rights Center at the University in Dayton, Ohio. After Talbott enrolled at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine on the Arizona campus, she became curious about how victims of trafficking interact with the medical community. Her curiosity led to research, and research led to enhancing the medical school’s curriculum.

On October 18, 2021, the President’s Commission on White House Fellows announced the appointment of the 2021-2022 class of White House Fellows, the most diverse class in the history of the program. Growing up in the Dominican Republic, third year medical student Johanny Lopez Dominguez remembers her grandfather's health struggle. He lived in a remote part of the country, and it was challenging to get the care he needed for his diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The term "fourth-year medical student" feels like a misnomer for Nicolas Rubel, who finished his final year at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Florida. The reason? The former firefighter and paramedic has two other roles that he says are even more important than medicine. Nick is a husband and father of two. He recognizes that he's considered a nontraditional student, and the 36-year-old has ambitious goals for his career, but it can't come at the expense of his family.

It was a day 10 years in the making for Jacqueline Zayas. On a Sunday afternoon in late May, surrounded by classmates and a contingent of her loved ones, Dr. Zayas officially earned her medical degree as part of Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine’s class of 2021.

Our students are the ones who truly know what it means to work and sacrifice through four years of medical school and to see that culminate on Match Day. These are their words and reflections on their past medical education at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, the present day, and their future plans.
Match Day pairs medical students and graduate medical education programs, and is administered by the National Resident Matching Program. All graduating medical students across the U.S. participate in Match Day and open their envelopes at the same time. This year, Match Day looked a bit different for Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.
The Integrated Education and Research Building will be constructed between the Mayo Clinic Building and Arizona State University's Health Futures building in Phoenix. Construction is expected to be completed in 2024.

The Department of Medicine Medical Grand Rounds (MGR) is a weekly conference intended to educate health care providers on best practices. These weekly conferences address current topics in clinical medicine, research, health care policy, medical education, and satisfy criteria for Continuing Medical Education (CME).

Answering a need for help as COVID-19 began to spread in the U.S. earlier in the year, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine students in Arizona and Minnesota began volunteering to conduct digital health surveys, provide dependent care, answer phones, organize blood donations, and pitch in wherever extra hands were needed.
