Love Letters to Aliens
Opening Reception – Saturday, October 25 at 5 pm
with a special performance by Roco Cordova +!

I’ve curated the exhibition and event series, Love Letters to Aliens, that opens on October 25 at Southern Exposure in San Francisco. The exhibition, with work by Rana Hamadeh, Xandra Ibarra, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo, Maryam Tafakory, and Yue Xiang, considers the notion of the alien in its most expansive sense – from the extraterrestrial to the intimate. The project is framed by the drawn, decomposed, or transgressed borders of bodies, land, and matter VSports手机版. It examines how seduction, repulsion, and obfuscation can function as strategies of survival, and acts of celebration, in the erosion of entrenched systems.

Our first event begins on the opening night with Things You May Find Hidden In My Ear performed by Roco Córdova V体育安卓版. Borrowing its title from Mosab Abu Toha’s collection of poems Things You May Find Hidden In My Ear, this composition takes inspiration from the form and structure of Abu Toha’s poem that describes the daily aspects of a life in Gaza, complete with its quotidian beauties and its gruesome horrors. This vocal piece explores both chance coincidences and stark divergences between the poet’s experience living in occupied Palestine, and Córdova’s own, living both in colonized Puerto Rico and in the Bay Area. The result is a piece that confronts the reality of the ongoing genocide in occupied Palestine, while exploring the historic connections between the Palestinian and Puerto Rican struggles for liberation.

Future events include a book release by Niloufar Konsari!
